Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center recently conducted a study to better understand hospital readmission rates among children who suffer from asthma, and found that financial and social hardships play a big role in how often asthmatic kids require medical attention.
According to a press release published by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center on Monday, February 3, black children with asthma were more than twice as likely to be readmitted to the hospital within one year than their white counterparts. The source reports that this disparity resulted mostly from the former's lower socioeconomic status, which is characterized by a lack of employment and not owning a car, among other factors.
Doctors involved with this study noted that by identifying these social hardships, they may be able to provide more targeted community support for asthmatic children in need.
"There is tremendous potential for changes in clinical practice," said Dr. Robert Kahn, senior author of the study, in a press statement. "Transportation barriers might be addressed with home delivery of medications, job barriers with a connection to job training and both helped by a community health worker. The goal would be upstream, community-based prevention, rather than paying for readmissions."
