School nurses in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, estimate that approximately half of the 26,000 students who attend Pittsburgh Public Schools suffer from symptoms of asthma, reports CBS Pittsburgh. In response to this alarming information, Heinz Endowments has given researchers at Allegheny General Hospital $415,000 to develop hard data on this issue and determine if the asthma problem is as severe as nurses claim.
According to the source, Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is located, was recently ranked the sixth-worst in Pennsylvania in terms of asthma-related hospital visits, which experts say is likely a result of excessive air pollution in the area. As part of its study, Allegheny General Hospital will focus on this important factor.
"Starting this month, the researchers will begin tracking 150 fifth-graders from three city schools," explains the news outlet. "The researchers will use questionnaires and breathing tests to determine which of the students have asthma, then examine school for conditions that contribute to the condition, including mold, dusty carpets and air pollution."
