Immunotherapy during pregnancy may reduce a child’s chance of developing allergies

Data suggests that allergies can be genetic, meaning that parents who suffer from this affliction have a good chance of passing it on to their children. That being said, a new study presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) suggests that women who undergo immunotherapy during pregnancy may be able to decrease their children's odds of developing allergies.

"Our research found trends suggesting women receiving allergy shots either before or during pregnancy reduced their child's chances of having asthma, food allergies, or eczema," said Dr. Jay Lieberman of the ACAAI in a recent press release. "Prior studies have suggested that mothers can pass protective factors to their fetus that may decrease their child's chance of developing allergic disease, and these protective factors are increased with allergy immunotherapy."

According to the source, immunotherapy is considered to be one of the most effective ways to treat allergies, for which there is currently no known cure. If you're one of the millions of Americans who suffers from this irritating and often debilitating affliction, it may be in your best interest to speak with your physician about this type of treatment.
