Researchers discover link between asthma and mood disorders

A recent study conducted by Taiwanese doctors reveals that there may be a link between childhood asthma and mood disorders.

According to medwireNews, researchers at Taipei Veterans General Hospital determined that asthmatic children between the ages of 10 and 15 were more likely to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder and major depression later in life than their non-asthmatic counterparts.

As for the cause behind this link, the team is reportedly still unclear. They did, however, find that the use of inhaled corticosteroids — a suspected cause of mood disorders — did not factor into the psychological diagnoses in this particular study.

"Determining the underlying pathophysiology of the role of asthma and other allergic diseases in the development of mood disorders needs more investigation," explained the researchers, as noted by the news outlet. "Further studies also would be required to clarify whether prompt intervention for asthma would decrease the risk of the development of mood disorders."
