The key to combating childhood asthma is understanding unique triggers

For the millions of children in the United States who suffer from asthma, living with this chronic respiratory disease can be quite the challenge.

However, Dr. Stephen Teach, director of the asthma center at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., claims that asthma is a manageable condition, noting that the key to keeping symptoms under control is understanding what triggers a flare-up in each individual person.

According to The Washington Post, Dr. Teach analyzes each of his patients to determine what kinds of irritants — cold weather, tobacco smoke, pollen, etc. — are most likely to cause a negative reaction. Then, he tailors their medication and educates the children and their parents about the importance of avoiding certain triggers, such as cigarette smoke.

"I always tell my parents, you wouldn't give your kid poisoned food to eat or poisoned water to drink, let's be sure not to give them poisoned air to breathe," Teach told the news outlet.

If your child suffers from asthma, it's important to do everything you can to help him or her combat this chronic respiratory disease, as it can lead to dangerous complications if left untreated. In addition to finding a skilled doctor for your son or daughter, there are other simple steps you can take around the house to reduce his or her exposure to triggers.
