Did you know that there are certain parts of the United States that are especially hard on people who suffer from chronic respiratory diseases? According to The Modesto Bee, California's Central Valley, which includes cities like Fresno, Stockton, Modesto and Sacramento, is an asthma hot spot.
"The region's pick-your-poison air is the result of a complex web of factors exacerbated by the area's climate, weather patterns and geography," explains the source. "Ozone and particulate matter, the two pollutants most heavily linked to asthma, become trapped in the vast basin between the Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada. The particulate matter is a dangerous mix produced by car exhaust, diesel fuel, road dust and a variety of emissions from agricultural operations."
The news outlet reports that in Fresno's school district alone, 17 percent of students have asthma. It's gotten so bad that some schools even have color-coded flags on their premises that alert students and their parents to especially bad asthma days.
If your family resides in the Central Valley or another part of the country that is considered an asthma hot spot, you can rest assured knowing that there are actions you can take to improve your son or daughter's quality of life.
