Be careful when mixing cold and allergy medications

As a parent, you know that when your child is sick you'll do almost anything to fix whatever is wrong. However, according to a recent article published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), some of your tried-and-true methods of treatment may actually be doing more harm than good.

The news outlet reports that many of the medications used to treat seasonal allergies contain the same active ingredients found in formulas that help combat the common cold. This creates a problem, as it can lead to accidental overdoses.

In order to prevent this from happening, careful discussions with your son or daughter's physician are necessary.

"The AAP encourages parents to keep a list of the over-the-counter medicines their child is taking and sharing it when they see their pediatrician," notes the source. "It also is a good idea to keep a list of prescription medications. Parents should talk with their pediatrician about medication choices, especially if their child is under six years of age."

Although drugs are often the best way to quell irritating symptoms, there are other effective changes you can make around your home to improve your little one's quality of life. Start by installing an allergen air purifier, which removes household contaminants directly from the air and can make an immediate and lasting difference. You may also want to consider purchasing hypoallergenic bedding to prevent dust mites, pet dander and other irritants from building up in your child's sheets, mattress and pillowcases.
