Asthma left untreated during pregnancy can lead to health problems in babies

People who suffer from asthma understand first-hand how important it is to keep their symptoms under control, but doing so is even more critical for pregnant women.

According to a recent review published in The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (TOG), women who fail to adequately treat the chronic respiratory disease during pregnancy are more likely to undergo Caesarian sections and have babies with low birth weights.

"Asthma is a widespread condition and poor management during pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and fetal outcomes," Professor Chris Brightling, co-author of the review, said in a press statement. "Good asthma management to maintain tight control is vital and standard therapy may be safely used in pregnancy to achieve this along with close surveillance from midwives, obstetricians and for women with severe asthma a respiratory physician."

One of the positive takeaways from the review is that most women do not experience a worsening of symptoms during labor.

Being pregnant is difficult enough without having to deal with debilitating asthma symptoms. In addition to working with doctors to find the right treatments for this chronic respiratory disease, there are changes that women can make around the home to improve their quality of life. It's a known fact that allergens such as pet dander and dust mites may exacerbate asthma symptoms, so by using hypoallergenic mattresses, sheets and pillowcases on your bed, you can significantly reduce your exposure to these potentially harmful irritants.
