In order to more effectively treat individuals who suffer from allergies, it's necessary for experts to better understand what causes these afflictions and how they develop within the human body. A recent study conducted by researchers in Sweden and Scotland and published in the scientific journal "Gut" reveals that having a Caesarean section as opposed to a natural birth may lead to a child being more prone to allergies.
According to Science Daily, the researchers examined 24 children under the age of two, charting the level of bacteria present in those who were born by both Caesarean sections and vaginal births.
"[Children who] were delivered by Caesarean section had a less diverse gut microbiota during their first two years of life than those born vaginally," states the source. "Particularly clear was the low diversity among the group Bacteroidetes that, according to earlier observations of the research groups, are particularly linked to protection against allergies. Thus, these children may run greater risk of developing allergies."
The news outlet reports that this lack of bacteria is associated with other complications such as diabetes and irritable bowel syndrome, noting that it's important for mothers to consider how Caesarean sections may affect the health of their babies.
