Flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables can help treat seasonal allergies

With a particularly severe spring allergy season underway across the United States, many people are suffering from the effects of tree pollen and other common irritants that enter the air during this time of the year.

"It is terrible, it has been debilitating for me," stay-at-home-mom Sharon Watts told WUSA9, a Washington, D.C.-area news station, explaining that she and her three children have been experiencing itchy, red eyes and other uncomfortable symptoms.

While individuals like Watts likely try a lot of different methods to treat their seasonal allergies, they may be overlooking some natural remedies that could bring them relief. Did you know, for example, that the food you eat can help reduce your symptoms?

Allergy specialist Dr. Richard Rosenthal told the source that he recommends consuming foods high in quercetin, an antioxidant flavonoid known for its anti-inflammatory effects, that has been shown to help ease pollen allergies. Apples, tomatoes and onions are just a few of the many fruits and vegetables that contain quercetin, so you may want to consider eating more of these foods in the coming months. The key, says Dr. Rosenthal, is to make them part of your regular diet.

Of course, individuals with seasonal allergies should still set up an appointment with a specialist to see if there is any prescription medication they can use to reduce their symptoms. Fortunately, there are other actions you can take to ensure your health and comfort this spring and summer, such as investing in a whole house air purifier, which removes allergens directly from the air and makes it easier for you to breathe inside your home.
