One thing most Americans can agree on is that it's been a long, harsh winter. Even after the season officially changed to spring a few weeks ago, many locales are still experiencing some of the lingering effects of winter. Unfortunately, allergy experts are saying that the delay in spring weather may end up having a negative effect on the millions of people who suffer from allergic asthma.
"There are two things about this year's season: It just came out that the pollen peaks will be a little bit delayed because of the severity of winter and late snow storms. Some are saying it will be a perfect storm because of the pent up storage of pollen," Dr. Andrew Ting, assistant professor of pediatrics, pulmonary and critical care at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, said in an interview with FoxNews.com. "The second thing is if you go to www.pollen.com, [pollen counts are] already high."
Tree pollen allergies in particular have exploded, meaning asthmatics who are allergic to this ubiquitous irritant should take aggressive steps toward preventing and treating symptoms. The news outlet reports that allergic asthma sufferers should have already visited with their doctors weeks ago to begin treatment, however it's not too late for these individuals to take some preventative measures.
In addition to seeing a physician and taking any prescribed or recommended medications, allergy and asthma sufferers can find relief by making simple changes around the house. For example, by installing an allergen air purifier and investing in allergenic bedding, you can significantly reduce your exposure to common pollutants.
