These foods may help combat seasonal allergy symptoms

Spring allergy season is officially here, and experts are predicting that it's going to be worse than usual – lasting longer and hitting with more severity due to factors such as climate change and the effects of Hurricane Sandy. You don't want to be holed up inside just as the weather is getting nicer, so it's important to be proactive about preventing and treating your symptoms as pollen counts rise.

Fortunately, there are a number of natural remedies that can help you fight allergies. Here are some foods you may want to eat this season that can be beneficial in fending off these annoying triggers:

Leafy greens – Quercetin, a plant-derived flavonoid found in these and other fruits and vegetables – is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antihistamine phytonutrient that is known for reducing watery eyes and nasal symptoms.

Tomatoes – These red fruits – a staple for any summer salad – are inexpensive and easy to find during the warmer weather because that's when they're in season. And, they're full of vitamin C, which has been shown to suppress inflammation that can otherwise exacerbate allergic reactions.

Turmeric – This gold-colored spice contains curcumin, a plant that serves as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory among other documented health benefits. Turmeric is commonly used in curries popular in Indian cuisine.

While eating these foods may help alleviate your symptoms, you should still see a specialist and use any medication you've been prescribed to combat your allergies. Additionally, you may want to consider investing in a whole house air purifier, which removes allergens directly from the air and makes it easier for you to breath inside your home. If you spend a lot of time in your vehicle, a car cabin air filter can prevent pollutants from getting into the passenger compartment.
