Stop allergies in their tracks with these six tips

Fight back against allergy irritants with these six tips.

Seasonal allergy season is here, but so is some reprieve. Your allergies don't have to haunt you this season, and they don't have to last forever. Keep the following six tips in mind throughout your daily activities to keep yourself happy and healthy.

  • Be aware of what sets you off: Knowing what you're allergic to can help you avoid it.  Invest in both over-the-counter and prescription medicines as well as other healthy alternatives to fight allergies on all fronts.
  • Eat the right foods: According to Reader's Digest, eating fruits, vegetables, nuts and other food rich in antioxidants can help fight allergies from the inside out. These foods can prevent inner body inflammation.
  • Keep your nose clean: Pollen can stick to the inside of your nose, and if left untreated, can further irritate it. A saline rinse or other nasal spray can help keep your nose clean.
  • Monitor your home: Make sure your home is cool and dry. Temperatures in the mid to low 60s and 40-45 percent humidity can help keep allergens at bay.
  • Stay calm: Stress can release hormones that weaken your immune system and affect your overall health. According to Health Magazine, stress raises levels of the hormone cortisol, which can increase an allergic response. Next time you're stuck in a traffic jam or are late to work, remaining calm could be the difference between a severe or minor allergy day.
  • Wash your hair at night: Pollen and other allergens can get stuck in your hair, especially if you use many hair products like gel. You don't have to wash your hair every night, but rinsing it out before bed could keep both your home and bed free of irritants.
