Seasonal allergies may lead to weight gain

Seasonal allergies can have a significant impact on an individual's quality of life. However, according to an October 1 press release published by the Clarity Allergy Center in Illinois, this can transcend the typical symptoms such as a stuffy nose, itchy eyes and difficulty sleeping. The source suggests that when people allow their allergies to get out of control, they may put themselves at risk of gaining weight and thus becoming even unhealthier.

Here are a couple of the reasons behind this unfortunate possibility:

Lack of sleep – "A University of California, Berkeley sleep study explored why lack of sleep leads to weight gain," states the press release. "First, they found lack of sleep to impair participants' abilities to make complex decisions. Second, sleep deprivation boosted the brain centers that reward primal behaviors like eating. As a result, the sleepy participants were more drawn to junk food and unhealthy snacks."

Use of antihistamines – Many of the over-the-counter medications that alleviate allergy symptoms can also cause weight gain, reports the source. Fortunately, allergy sufferers may be able to avoid this by seeing a specialist who can give them better treatments with fewer side effects.

Another way to ensure you sleep well at night is to invest in hypoallergenic bedding. These special mattresses, sheets and pillowcases are designed to keep microscopic irritants like dust mites, pollen and pet dander from building up on your bed.
