MLB: Baseball player’s blurry vision from allergies

Professional baseball player Martin Prado is back to playing with his team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, after an optometrist determined allergies were causing blurry vision in his left eye.

Prado recently removed himself from a game when he began to feel that the blurriness was undermining his performance. When the Diamondbacks later left for an away game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Prado stayed behind to seek the advice of an eye professional, worried there might be something seriously wrong.

"I was concerned it was only one eye," Prado told AZCentral Sports. "That's why I wanted to see a doctor to see if there's something else in there. But everything was fine, and it was just an allergy in my left eye. With the medicine, it goes away."

While the most common eye-related symptoms of seasonal allergies are itchiness and redness, some sufferers do experience sensitivity to light and blurry vision. Other symptoms can include watering, soreness and stinging. Some people also get dark circles in the under-eye area, known as allergy shiners.

If you're suffering from eye allergies, a doctor can recommend oral antihistamines or antihistamine eye drops to alleviate your symptoms. An allergist may also ask you about other possible irritants, like make-up, shampoo and eye creams.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, take a few simple steps to help manage your symptoms. Always shower before bed to wash away pollen that's collected on your skin and hair. Keep your windows closed and use an air conditioner if possible. You should also consider investing in household allergy control products like an allergen air purifier and allergy bedding, which can dramatically improve your symptoms by limiting the presence of allergens inside your home.
