Google search data provides valuable insight into seasonal allergies

Doctors and specialists have been reviewing Google search data to gain insight into allergy sufferers and their common afflictions.

If you've ever turned to Google to ask questions or find advice about allergies, you've probably contributed to the internet giant's abundant search data that doctors and specialists have been reviewing to gain insight into allergy sufferers and their common afflictions.

According to Medical News Today, Dr. Leonard Bielory, an allergist with the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), has been analyzing this information to better understand the symptoms, geography and patterns representative of people who suffer from allergies. Dr. Bielory presented his research at the ACAAI's Annual Scientific Meeting earlier this month.

Since the data shows that the majority of people with allergies experience symptoms in the spring, Dr. Bielory is encouraging people to be proactive and make an appointment with an allergist before they're too runny-eyed and stuffy-nosed, as treating symptoms early along with the help of a doctor can lead to greater overall relief.

"Allergy sufferers experience heightened allergy symptoms in the spring season, and again during September due to weed pollen and grass season," Dr. Bielory explained in a press release. "The peak week for all allergy symptom searches is the second week of May, suggesting sufferers may be experiencing both spring and summer allergy symptoms."

It will be interesting to see if other doctors and specialists follow in Dr. Bielory's footsteps and use search data to help them better understand their patients' needs. If you have seasonal allergies, you may want to take his advice and get a handle on them before the warmer weather rolls around. Another thing you can do during the winter is purchase an air humidifier or a whole house air purifier to help alleviate your symptoms.
