Expert says fall allergy season is starting early this year

Allergy sufferers can attest to the fact that this spring and summer have brought on notably high levels of pollen. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that relief is coming any time soon. Wisconsin media publication WLUK-TV FOX 11 reports that fall allergy season, which is characterized by a large presence of ragweed pollen, has already begun.

Dr. Steve Kagen, an allergy specialist, explained to the source that ragweed usually doesn't start appearing until around August 15, but notes that he has been seeing more patients than usual complaining of fall allergies early on in the month.

Individuals who are allergic to ragweed suffer from a variety of symptoms that may include nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing and sinus headaches.

"It's really important that children, when heading back to school, are healthy, and they can breathe, not just at nighttime through their nose, but during the daytime so they're not distracted at school," Kagen told the news outlet.

As summer transitions into fall, it's a good idea for individuals who have ragweed allergies to make sure that this affliction is under control as soon as possible. One of the best ways to go about this is by taking preventative measures — such as seeing a specialist about potential treatments — before allergens are at their most pervasive and ubiquitous.

Fortunately, there are also steps you can take around the house to eliminate the presence of dust mites, pet dander, ragweed and other irritants, such as changing your clothes right when you get home and purchasing hypoallergenic bedding to ensure a good night of sleep.
