Carpets, rugs act as “filters,” trapping allergens

If you are looking for one more way to ease your allergy symptoms, look no further than your vacuum cleaner. In a recent column, carpet cleaning expert Chuck Roberts said seasonal allergy sufferers should try to vacuum at least once every day during peak allergen periods. That's because rugs, carpets and furniture effectively function as filters, trapping dust, hair, pollen and dander.

"Did you know that vacuuming alone (a good thorough vacuuming) can remove approximately 70 percent of all dry soils and pollutants trapped in your carpet, rugs, or furniture?" Roberts writes. "And most dry soils are deposited in the first 10-15 feet of the entrance area?"

Here are some vacuuming tips for minimizing allergy symptoms:

  • Change the bag: Replace the vacuum cleaner bag as soon as it is half full.
  • Invest in a HEPA filter: A vacuum with a high-performing HEPA filter is the best choice for allergy sufferers because it is so efficient and effective. We offer many options on the Allergy Be Gone website.
  • Take your time: Roberts says if you rush while vacuuming, you'll leave allergens behind. Instead, slowly move forward and backward in each area seven or eight times to be sure you remove as much dust as possible.
  • Use mats: Consumer Reports recommends setting a "no shoes" rule indoors and placing small mats at all entryways. This results in less debris making its way to living areas.
  • Vacuum everything: According to Martha Stewart, you should vacuum nearly everything in your house, including furniture, curtains, walls and baseboards.

For ideal allergy fighting conditions in your home, also consider investing in an allergen air purifier to remove dust and pollen from the air, and allergenic bedding, to keep it from settling into your mattresses and pillows. Shop the Allergy Be Gone website today!
