Studies you should know about: Part Three

Over the past few days, we have been discussing some of the best ways to control your asthma based on recent studies that have been conducted all over the globe. Today, we will offer two more studies as our last installment of that series.

Partial asthma control – While many asthma sufferers would love to see their symptoms dissipate entirely, the fact of the matter is that partial control (PCA) is actually more effective, according to a recent study from scientists in the Netherlands. The study examined 611 adults – ages 18 to 50 – who were prescribed inhaled corticosteroids.
"We found that a treatment approach aiming at PCA instead of [controlled asthma] significantly decreases asthma medication use and associated costs, whereas asthma control, quality of life and severe exacerbation rates remain similar," the researchers wrote. "Treatment aimed at achieving and maintaining [controlled asthma] as such offers no additional benefits from the health economic, patient and clinical perspective over aiming for PCA."

Psychological Intervention – Was found to help patients who suffer from extreme asthma symptoms, according to a study conducted by Andrew Tan of the University Hospital Southampton, Hampshire, England. Patients who had recently seen a psychologist also exhibited fewer days overall in hospital stays, and fewer admissions than those patients who had not had psychological treatment.
