Studies you should know about: Part One

On this blog, we talk quite a bit about the impact that asthma has on the people who suffer from the disease. We discuss some of the medications, products and preventative measures that people can take to lessen their asthma symptoms.

Recently, many scientists have been conducting studies on the harmful effects of asthma and what people can do to lessen the severity of their attacks. At the recent European Respiratory Society International Congress, a number of research studies were presented, including insights on six studies that you should know about if you suffer from asthma symptoms. Over the next few days, we will discuss these studies in depth, so you have a better understanding of asthma as a whole.

Elderly asthma patients – In Japan, researchers conducted a retrospective study on 45 elderly and 67 young patients with asthma. It was determined through their research that elderly asthma sufferers were more likely to have increased involvement with small and large airways. The researchers also found less signs of atopy in these older participants.

Foreign-born US adults – According to a study conducted by researchers at Northwestern University, foreign-born Americans exhibit less prevalence of asthma symptoms than Americans who are born in the country. The study examined the 1997 to 2011 National Health Interview Survey data, and the 447,801 adults who had responded to the questions determining asthma history. It found that adults born abroad were less susceptible to asthma, but the longer you spend in the U.S., the better your chances of developing the disease over time.
