Smoking fathers potential risk factor for their children?

When it comes to health risks for children, most people know the long list of 'no-no's' for mothers-to-be, but a recent study indicates that there are significant implications for paternal health hazards as well.

A recent study from researchers at the University of Bergen examined the smoking habits of more than 13,000 men and women, as well as their children. The research found that children whose fathers smoked before conception were more prone to non-allergenic asthma. Additionally, the risk for the child was increased if the father started smoking before the age of 15 and continued smoking long-term.

"This study is important as it is the first study looking at how a father's smoking habit pre-conception can affect the respiratory health of his children. Given these results, we can presume that exposure to any type of air pollution, from occupational exposures to chemical exposures, could also have an effect," said researcher from the University of Bergen, Cecile Svanes, in an official statement.

What struck researchers as a bit odd was that there was no correlation between prevalence of asthma and a mother being a smoker prior to conception.

With this information on hand, researchers say they can now advocate for the appropriate intervention and prevention for asthma and allergy relief.

While this is preliminary research into a vast and varied topic, the results indicate an importance for care of yourself in order to prevent pre-existing conditions for your offspring.
