Researchers identify gene linked to asthma symptoms

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, there are 8.2 percent of adults and 9.5 percent of children in the United States suffer from asthma and 3,404 Americans die from this chronic respiratory disease each year.

Fortunately, researchers from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) recently announced that they have discovered a link between ORMDL3, a gene that affects an individual's susceptibility to asthma, and the airway inflammation that people who have the disease often experience during an attack.

"While exciting, our finding is just one piece of the puzzle," said Dr. Srirama Rao, one of the researchers who worked on the study. "The more we understand about various asthma susceptibility genes including ORMDL3, the better positioned we will be to strategize new treatment options."

Still, even with this small bit of information, scientists are closer to discovering new ways of managing debilitating asthma symptoms, which is great news for the millions of people across the United States who have to deal with this potentially dangerous affliction every day.
