Job security found to be linked to asthma development

Asthma sufferers know that their symptoms are sometimes triggered for strange reasons. Whether it is allergy-induced or caused by stress, asthmatics are well aware of how to control their asthma symptoms as well as prevent an attack.

But a recent report indicates that a new cause of asthma development and attacks could be unpredicted, and potentially uncontrollable. According to Dr. Jian Li of the Institute of Occupational and Social Medicine at the University of Dusseldorf in Germany, job insecurity could play a large role in the development of asthma in individuals around the globe.

The study was conducted by examining the decline of job potential in Europe following the start of the recession in 2008 compared with the number of first time asthma patients reported during that time.

While it was an observational study and there is no definitive cause and effect, the researchers argue that their findings are consistent with studies which have found that psychological stress is related to the onset of asthma.

According to Medical News Today, "In a further analysis, after ruling out various factors like age, income, gender, depression and lifestyle, the team found the risk of developing asthma for the first time tended to rise in line with job insecurity. They found every 25 percent increase in perceived likelihood of job loss was tied to a 24 percent increased risk of being diagnosed with new-onset asthma."
