How to reduce risk of an asthma attack

In the hazy days of July, many people enjoy the hot, muggy weather that is perfect for beach days spent soaking up the sun.

Unfortunately, not everyone is so fond of these sticky summer days, as poor air quality in humid weather can make it hard for asthma sufferers to perform simple tasks.

Asthma affects the lungs by inflaming airways. People who suffer from this disease tend to cough, wheeze and be short of breath. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, approximately 25 million people – including 7 million children – suffer from asthma in the United States alone.

One of the best methods of preventing an asthma attack in this type of weather is to drink plenty of water and stay sufficiently hydrated. Asthmatics should also be prepared to stay indoors with ventilated, filtered or dehumidified air. They would do well to seek out air conditioned locations like libraries, community centers and malls.

Another important factor is exercise. While regularly exercising is generally best practice, on these humid days, asthma sufferers may want to seek out a gym or indoor facility to work out, as outdoor activities may be rife with allergens. If you must be outside, try to keep it to mornings and evenings.

Above all else, allergy and asthma sufferers must remember to always keep a rescue inhaler on hand.

Whether indoors or out, it is always important to be prepared to fight back against allergens and other asthma inducers. Be sure that you do all you can for allergy prevention by purchasing hypoallergenic bedding and keeping your home as clean and allergen-free as possible.
