Broccoli may ease asthma symptoms, study says

A  new study says that eating steamed broccoli every day may help ease the symptoms of asthma sufferers. Researchers at the University of Melbourne in Australia based their conclusions on recent laboratory tests.

Lead researcher Nadia Mazarakis told news outlet HNGN that sulforaphane, which is naturally found in broccoli, could help guard against inflammation of the respiratory system.

"Laboratory tests have shown that consumption of broccoli changes the formation of the airway and may make clear breathing easier for those who suffer from asthma and allergies," Mazarakis said. "Blockages in the airway were reversed almost entirely."

The scientists found that other vegetables, such as kale, brussels sprouts, cabbage, bok choy and cauliflower could also prevent and even repair damage to the lungs and airways. They say the research is still in the very early stages, and people should continue to follow their normal treatment plan. However, in the future, the knowledge could benefit asthma sufferers, especially those who do not respond well to existing medical treatments.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 18.7 million adults currently have asthma. More than nine in 10 kids suffers from asthma. The CDC reports that asthma costs the United States as much as $56 billion in a single year.
