A look at the link between allergies and asthma

Among the millions of people in the United States who suffer from asthma, Everyday Health reports that 60 percent of them have what is called extrinsic asthma, which means that their symptoms are triggered by common allergens such as pet dander, dust mites, pollen and mold. This essentially indicates that for these individuals, the chronic respiratory disease is linked with allergies.

"People think of seasonal allergies as a runny nose, but your airway starts at your nose," Dr. Boyd Hehn, a pulmonologist at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospitals in St. Louis, explained in an interview with the source. "So it's a chain reaction where that runny nose will cause the asthma to act up and the airway to become inflamed."

For people who have extrinsic asthma, an important part of keeping their symptoms under control is determining what they're allergic to so that they can do their best to stay away from those irritants. Fortunately, this is possible with the help of a doctor.

While it's difficult to avoid allergens entirely, there are certain products you can invest in that will significantly reduce your exposure to them and improve your quality of life. A hypoallergenic mattress, for example, will ensure that dust mites don't accumulate in your bed and irritate you while you're trying to sleep. This, when combined with an allergen air purifier, can make a huge difference around the house.
