31st annual Asthma Ski Day event in Pennsylvania draws large crowd

People who have been diagnosed with asthma often have to make changes to their lives to accommodate their affliction and ensure that they can live as symptom-free as possible. However, just because you suffer from this chronic respiratory disease doesn't mean you have to completely eliminate all the activities that you enjoy.

To reinforce this point, Montage Mountain Ski Resort in Scranton, Pennsylvania, held the 31st annual Asthma Ski Day event on Sunday, January 26. Co-sponsored by Montage Mountain and the Geisinger Community Medical Center (GCMC), the event invites asthmatic children between the ages of six and 18 to ski for free, ensuring that registered pulmonary technicians are on site to address any medical issues that may arise.

Dr. Mel Wolk, the retired pediatrician who founded Asthma Ski Day, explained the purpose of the event in an interview with the Scranton Times Tribune:

"It's to help kids build up confidence and not be afraid of their illness. We try to show parents of asthmatic children that you can participate in winter sports with the proper medical care."

According to one GCMC spokeswoman, approximately 125 people showed up to participate in yesterday's event. As usual, no major medical issues arose throughout the day.
