Specific diet best able to fend off allergy symptoms

Fish can help reduce allergy symptoms because it is high in omega-3.

Allergies may be inescapable, especially during this time of year, when pollen seemingly appears on every surface, both inside and outside. While avoiding irritants altogether may seem like a tall task, individuals with sensitivities to allergens may be able to fend off symptoms by building up their immune systems.

One of the best ways to ensure good health during allergy season is to maintain a healthy diet, rich in food containing omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, such as nuts, fruits and vegetables and fish. Supplements such as flaxseed oil can also be effective, although experts believe that the compound is better absorbed in the body when food is consumed.

"Allergies cause inflammation of the tissues lining the nose and throat. Finding foods that decrease inflammation will lead to relief," Mike Tringale, vice president of external affairs for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, told Time Magazine last week.

Other studies have shown that in addition to insulating individuals from the effects of allergies, foods high in omega-3 can have a myriad of health benefits, including increased blood circulation and a decreased prevalence of mental conditions like depression.

Individuals can also build up their immune system by exercising regularly and getting an adequate amount of sleep each night. When the body is in peak working condition, it is better able to fight off allergy symptoms.

Should allergies become too much to handle, sufferers may need to find relief through a variety of different treatments. Whether this involves using eye drops, running a HEPA air purifier in the home, using a saline rinse, taking allergy medications or some combination of these treatments, symptoms can be successfully beaten. Eventually, allergy season will pass and individuals will be able to get on with their lives.
