People can develop allergies at any point in their lives.

Many older adults who never suffered from allergies when they were younger, may now find they do. No matter the season or places they visited as a kid, they never had watery eyes or a runny nose because of pollen, dust mites or pets. Then one day allergies hit them like they never did before.

Why do some people, who never suffer from allergies, suddenly face the onslaught of ruthless allergens? According to research,  people can develop allergies at any age and for many reasons.

"In general, as kids get older they can grow out of allergies. But there's a whole world where, for millions of people, that's not the case. Some people even grow into allergies. Mature adults, even in their fifties and eighties, come into my office with a variety of allergies," stated Dr. Clifford W. Bassett,  a clinical instructor in the division of infectious diseases and immunology at New York University.

A person might move from one geographic region that is low in allergens to another, which has a higher quantity of allergy-producing substances. A person might also adopt a pet that he or she is unknowingly allergic too. However, the one common trait in why people develop allergies is their immune system, which can become oversensitive to substances. In fact, many of these substances that enter a person's body are harmless. Yet, the body mistakenly begins to produce allergic antibodies called IgE antibodies to fight them off.

In order to better manage allergies, consider purchasing a quality humidifier, allergy-free pillow covers and mattress covers. Remember to clean your home, car or office throughout the year and shut your windows when the pollen count is high.
