Can plants help reduce allergies?

Planting the right greenery can help manage your allergies.

Are you trying to avoid plants at all costs this summer because of your severe allergies? Do you think your best bet to enjoy the season would be to spend time in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona where oak, acacia and maple trees don't exist? It wouldn't be a surprising or irrational move based on the type of allergy season most have endured.

It's one of the worst allergy seasons in recent memory due to a long winter and condensed spring and summer. For many parts of the U.S., the long winter meant many plants bloomed late and began to produce pollen later in the season. This happened at the same time other plant species were producing pollen during the normal stages of their life cycle and the results have been disastrous.

So while sufferers have often turned to medications to solve their stuffy and runny noses, there may be another solution. Enter Tom Ogren,  an allergy and plant expert, who believes he has the perfect method to reduce allergies this season. It'll involve digging, watering and some elbow grease, but once finished, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results.

In his latest book, The Allergy-Fighting Garden: Stop Allergies and Asthma With Smart Landscaping, Ogren advises people to only sow allergy-free plants and flowers around their yard and in their garden. Many of the allergy-free plants can either reduce reactions or block allergens all together.

Ogren found that male plants produced more allergens than female plants. He also found that most people in the U.S. purchase male plants more frequently than their female counterparts. His solution is simple, even if it takes some work: Reduce the number of male plants and look for plants that act as pollen traps.
