Tips for decluttering your closet during this year’s spring cleaning

While you're completing your spring cleaning tasks this season, one of the chores that's probably on your list is decluttering your closet. Over the course of the year, these spaces can become quite messy, so it's a good idea to dedicate at least a few hours to sorting through the belongings that are stored in them.

While cleaning your closet, consider following these tips so you can determine what to do with the clothing items you come across:

Count them – Taking inventory of what you own is a great way to decide what you really need. Unless you count your clothes out, you probably won't even realize that you have 12 plain black shirts or two of the same pair of pants. This can help you figure out what you're going to keep.

Donate them – Once you've determined which items you're willing to part with, rather than tossing them in the garbage, bring your unwanted garments to the local Salvation Army or donate them to an organization like Big Brothers Big Sisters. Not only will you be aiding others who are in need, but you can also deduct these charitable contributions on your tax forms.

Fix them – Chances are you'll find a number of shirts that are missing buttons or pants with zippers that need to be repaired. Instead of just stuffing these items back in your closet to be mended in the future, set aside some time to take out the needle and thread and make any necessary fixes.

As always, when scrubbing or decluttering any part of the home during this year's spring cleaning ritual, it's important for people who suffer from allergies and asthma to use products, such as those from EnviroRite, that will effectively remove allergens without aggravating their symptoms. It's also advisable to invest in a respirator mask, since these devices can ensure that you don't breathe in dust, mold, pet dander or other irritants.
