Prepare for travel season with these allergy tips: Part 2

Thinking about traveling but suffer from allergies? Make sure you're well prepared.

Thinking about traveling this spring and summer? If you are, and you regularly suffer from allergies, heed the following tips. In the final part of our two-part series, we explore a few more ways you can protect yourself from dangerous allergies while on vacation.

1. Remember your allergy medications
This should be obvious, but how many times do we find ourselves in a rush to pack and forget the most obvious items? If we're going on a cruise, for example, we forget to pack our favorite sunscreen. If we're going on a ski trip, we forget to pack our ski polls. And if we're taking a trip during allergy season, we're likely to forget our allergy medicine. The first thing you should pack is your allergy medicine.

2. Stay indoors even while on vacation
If pollen counts are high, opt for indoor activities instead of outdoor ones. For example, instead of taking that picturesque hike through the wilderness, catch a movie or stroll through a museum. Schedule the hike for another day, and when you do, protect yourself from allergies by taking medicine, bringing plenty of water to wash out your eyes and wearing sunglasses to block allergens.

It's important that you take the same allergy management approach while on vacation as you do at home. Switching up or becoming lazy in your allergy-fighting routine will only set you back.

3. Avoid pets, if possible
If you're going away to visit friends and family but are allergic to their pets, it may be best to look for alternative lodging. If you can't find such an establishment, try searching for other lodging such as B&Bs or cottages. The latter are often spaced out enough where pet dander won't cause your allergies to act up.
