Incoming college students should prepare for allergy season now

College students should be able to enjoy campus life, not suffer from allergies.

As high school draws to a close, seniors have a lot on their hands. They have to prepare for finals, finish up as their team's captains, purchase prom or formal outfits and enjoy every last bit of being a teenager. While these tasks are on many high school students' to-do lists, they should add one more responsibility: prepare for fall allergies.

While students will find a wealth of information on fall allergies as the summer fades into autumn, this is a topic they should actually address now. Too often people wait to manage allergy symptoms when they really need to address them immediately. This is especially true for prospective college students who will be moving onto campuses.

In a press release published by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Allergist David Stukus, MD, author of the article and member of the ACCAI Public Relations Committee, noted that college students may not remember to protect themselves from allergies because of their busy schedules.

"For most teens, going away to college marks their first time living independently," said Stukus. "In addition to moving to a new place, many must learn to manage their own schedule, diet, exercise and health. Young people may find their allergies and asthma neglected due to other, seemingly more important demands on their attention."

If you're a parent reading this article, make sure to have a conversation with your child about the importance of staying healthy. College demands a lot, and many times students disregard taking care of their bodies in the process.
