How to spring clean if you suffer from allergies: part 1

Using a vacuum that has a HEPA filter will ensure you stay health and allergy free while cleaning.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies and haven't begun spring cleaning yet, we understand why! It's not easy to dust while sneezing. Doing two things at once isn't easy, and you certainly shouldn't have to deal with allergies while getting your home ready for summer get-togethers. In this two-part series, we look at a couple of ways you can clean your residence in peace.

1. Always use HEPA filters
HEPA filters do a great job of preventing dust, dirt, debris and pollen from leaving the vacuum when in use. Not only does this make the cleaning process less stressful (you won't have allergy attacks), but it also keeps you healthy year-round. Always opt for vacuum cleaners that use HEPA filters.

Why are HEPA filters so good at stopping particles? According to HEPA, filters have efficiency ratings of "95 percent at 0.3 microns to "99.99999+ percent at 0.12 microns." While we're typically familiar with HEPA filters in vacuum cleaners, the corporation actually sells filters to a variety of different industries including, nuclear science, contamination control and pharmaceuticals. This ensures the product you're using is from a reputable business trusted by a range of different companies.

2. Use a mask
Using HEPA filters is a great start, but you need to take additional steps to ensure you're not breathing in harmful debris. Always wear a mask when you're vacuuming. As we stated before, HEPA filters are 95 to 99.9 percent effective. Using the mask will fill in those gaps. Why is wearing a mask so important? When you're cleaning the floor (especially rugs), dust that isn't captured by the vacuum flies into the air.
