How to control allergies while you sleep

Prior to going to bed, clean out your nasal passages.

Do you wake up every morning feeling tired? Despite your best effort to get a good night's slumber, you simply can't. If that's the case, allergies may be affecting your sleep. And there's research to back this up.

In a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers sought to determine how allergic rhinitis hurt people's ability to sleep well. They also believed that allergies could affect their social lives because they were constantly drowsy.

To conduct the study, researchers injected 600 patients with AR and studied them over the course of a year. They evaluated patients by using the Epsworth Sleepiness Scale, Sleep Disorders Questionnaire and Score for Allergic Rhinitis. They concluded that AR diminished sleep quality.

Don't let allergies affect you while you're attempting to catch some Z's. Here are a few ways to manage allergy symptoms:

1. Wash up
Prior to going to bed, take a shower. This will wash off any pollen that may be stuck to your body. While you're at it, clean out your nasal passages. According to Best Health, allergens, mold and dust can become lodged in your nasal passages. This causes inflammation, which can then result in a sinus infection.

2. Keep the windows closed
While it's nice to feel that cool spring breeze, it can increase the chance that you'll spend most of the night with a stuffy nose. Keep the windows closed and turn on the AC unit instead.

3. Take allergy medicine
It's important to regularly take prescribed allergy medicine. This medicine will help build up your body's defense system so it can better fight off pollen, dust and mold allergens.
