How long do summer allergies last?

Wondering when summer allergies will end? Typically during the winter.

Have you been suffering from allergies since winter faded into spring? That's not uncommon. Millions of Americans each year suffer from allergies and just as many wonder when their allergy symptoms will end.

Unfortunately, we have some bad news. Many people often deal with summer allergies from spring to fall. During the fall, ragweed becomes a more prominent allergen until all warm season allergies end with winter's arrival.

Michael Foggs, M.D., president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, said allergy sufferers can fare just as poorly during the summer as they do in the spring and fall.

"Summer allergies can cause severe symptoms for some sufferers, and can be just as bad as the spring and fall seasons," said Foggs, according to ACAAI. "Symptoms aren't always limited to the hallmark sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. Black eyes, lines across the nose and other cosmetic symptoms can occur."

If there is a bright side, it's this: There are plenty of ways for you to manage your allergy symptoms throughout the year. First, visit an allergy specialist who can diagnosis your condition. He or she may prescribe allergy medication which you should take regularly. From there, limit your exposure to allergens by staying indoors between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and closing your windows when allergy levels are high. If your allergies only get worse, make sure to consult with your doctor immediately.
