Eat these foods to manage seasonal allergies

Many foods have anti-histamine properties that can help you stop allergies in their tracks.

We're well into spring allergy season. Can you feel it? If you're struggling to manage allergies, you're not alone. Millions of others are running to pharmacies to refill their prescription allergy medicines. But what if we said you could avoid the lines and high costs of typical medication?

Do we have your attention yet?

According to Rebecca Turner, owner of Rebecca Turner Nutrition, a variety of foods can manage allergy symptoms. A few include yogurts, salmon, eggs, milk and fortified cereal. Yogurts are high in probiotics, while salmon and eggs increase vitamin D levels. Turner notes that low Vitamin D levels increase the chance people sneeze and develop sinus infections.

Kerri-Ann Jennings of WedMD said that other foods allergy sufferers should eat are kiwi, onions, pineapple, local honey and tuna. Kiwi has vitamin C, and onions contain quercetin. Both of these lower histamine levels. Additionally, pineapple, local honey and Tuna can either reduce inflammation or manage irritation.

While these foods should be part of any diet, we also suggest taking other steps to manage allergies. Regularly clean your home and office, avoid going outdoors during peak pollen hours, and use the AC unit instead of the fan. It's also important to know when allergies are most likely to affect you. If it's during the spring and summer, pay attention to pollen counts. When they're high, avoid going outside altogether.

Don't let allergies control your life. By following our advice, you'll not only manage your allergy symptoms, you'll live a healthier lifestyle.
