Dust mites leading cause of allergies, experts say

A recent report from Washington, D.C., news outlet WTOP highlights the tiny dust mite as a leading cause of perennial allergies. Dust mites are microscopic arachnids that feed on human skin and dander. They thrive in warm, moist places like mattresses and pillows.

Allergist Dr. Rachel Schreiber tells WTOP that you can often treat dust mite allergies like you would seasonal allergies. Over-the-counter antihistamines like Claritin, Zyrtec and Allegra may be effective.

If you think you could be allergic to dust and dust mites, The Mayor Clinic also advises investing in these household allergy control products to reduce the parasites' presence in your home:

  • Allergen air purifiers: Air purifiers can reduce the number of dust particles in the ambient air in your home. This, in turn, could decrease the presence of dust mites. Air purifiers will also help if you are allergic to seasonal irritants like pollen.
  • Allergen mattress covers: Because dust mites like warm, humid environments with plenty of dead human cells, they thrive in unprotected mattresses. Simply buying allergy mattress protectors for your beds can dramatically reduce the presence of mites. These protective layers seal off the mattress, preventing dust, skin and dander from setting inside in addition to keeping out parasites.
  • Dehumidifiers: If you live in a humid climate, investing in a dehumidifier can make your home much more comfortable for you, and much less comfortable for mites. These machines take moisture out of the air, collecting it in a tank for easy removal.
  • Mite proof bedding: You should also consider investing in a hypoallergenic comforter and pillows. Just like mattresses, these items can collect human debris.
