Control your allergies at the gym

Make sure your workout regimen isn't interrupted by managing your allergies.

It's not easy to work out while you're having a sneezing attack, unless you're looking to only work out your chest muscles. We're assuming you're not, so it's crucial that you take the necessary steps to control your allergies both before and during your gym session.

Here are three ways:

1. Clean before use
Many machines and mats can be full of allergens (dust, pollen, mites), not including other bacteria that could worsen symptoms. Prior to use, clean off equipment with a disinfectant spray. If you're extremely worried about having an allergy attack, bring your own mat.

2. Test the chlorine
You really won't have the authority to test the chlorine, but we advise asking the gym about the pool's chlorine levels. A study published in Environment Health Perspectives reported that chlorine could increase the risk of asthma in children. Adults may also be susceptible to increased irritation due to the chemicals. If your gym uses the minimum amount of chlorine, you may be safe to enter the pool.

3. Wash your clothes
We shouldn't need to remind you to wash your clothing after working out, but some people may think that nylon's moisture-wicking properties dispels sweat completely. While it does a great job of keeping us cool and dry, clothing still needs to be washed regularly to remove dirt, sweat and even allergens. We advise you to wash your clothes as soon as you're done wearnig them.
