Can allergies cause migraines?

According to the experts at Food Allergy Research and Education, as many as 15 million people have food allergies, and the Migraine Research Foundation estimates that nearly one in four American households has at least one migraine sufferer. Some experts believe these two common maladies are actually linked. Here are some common dietary triggers to consider if you suffer from migraines and think they may be caused by what you're eating and drinking:

Aspartame: An artificial sweetener often found in diet soda, aspartame is believed to cause migraines in some people. Light desserts, yogurts and candies may also contain aspartame.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): Monosodium Glutamate is a flavor enhancer sometimes added to canned vegetables, soups and processed meats. Some restaurants add MSG to their products, so if you have a sensitivity, confirm that your meal is MSG-free.

Nitrites: Nitrites are chemicals found in many processed foods like sausage, hot dogs, jerky and other items that have been canned, cured, pickled or smoked.

Sulfites: Sulfites have preservative properties and are often used in wine, dried fruit and processed foods.

Tannins: Tannins are found in tea, red-skinned apples, apple juice, cider and red wine. According to nutritionist Joy Bauer, tannins may trigger migraines.

Tyramine: Tyramine is a chemical believed to cause migraines. It is found in alcoholic beverages like beer, red wine, vermouth and sherry. (Alcohol also causes dehydration, which can start or worsen headaches.) You can also find Tyramine in preserved meats like salami and pepperoni and fermented soy products like teriyaki sauce and miso paste. Be wary of leftovers as Tyramine levels increase over time.
