Avoid allergens on Valentine's Day

Make sure your Valentine's Day surprises don't contain allergens.

Valentine's Day is coming up, and it's time to start thinking about what you'll be getting for your loved one this year. Although it should be a happy day filled with joy and love, allergens can ruin even the best laid plans.

Avoid allergens on Valentine's Day by keeping these things in mind:

  • Flowers: Some individuals have strong allergic reactions to certain flowers and pollens. Opt for a flower that produces little to no pollen, like roses, geraniums, daffodils and begonias. Stay away from sunflowers, chrysanthemums and daisies.
  • Food: Before you buy chocolates, make sure they don't contain any offending nuts or ingredients that might cause an allergic reaction. If you're going to eat at a new restaurant, check the menu beforehand to see if they have a wide array of options, and tell your server about the allergy before you order.
  • Fragrances: Perfume and cologne can make sweet gifts, but not if your loved one suffers from allergic reactions to strong fragrances. If your partner doesn't already wear a scent, then you might want to find another gift just to be on the safe side.
  • Jewelry: If you're buying jewelry this year, check beforehand to see how sensitive your partner's skin is to metals. Some people are allergic to nickel, which can be found even in some 14K gold pieces.
  • Kissing: If your loved one has food allergies, be sure to brush your teeth and stay away from the allergen for 16 to 24 hours before your date, so you don't accidentally contaminate them.
