Are allergy shots right for you?

Does your child need allergy shots?

If you suffer from allergies, then allergy shots may be a good solution for you.

Here are some things you should know when deciding whether or not to pursue this option:

  • Allergy shots work after years: For allergy shots to be effective, patients must receive a shot every month or so for 3 to 5 years. This is therefore not a good option if you don't have the time to commit to the treatment. Patients are also often required to wait in the doctor's office for 30 minutes following a shot, to make sure a severe reaction doesn't occur.
  • Any age group can receive shots: Children, adults and the elderly are all eligible for allergy shots. However, if you are pregnant, taking certain medications such as ACE inhibitors or beta blockers, have a severe heart condition or suffer from severe asthma, your doctor will probably not recommend allergy shots.
  • Shots don't work for food allergies: If you suffer from food allergies, allergy shots unfortunately won't help you. Allergy shots can be beneficial for people struggling with allergies to weed and tree pollen, grass, mold or fungi, dust mites and insect stings.
  • You can't avoid your allergen: Allergy shots may be a good choice for you if you aren't able to control your allergies, you can't avoid your allergen, your allergy medication doesn't work satisfactorily or you have negative reactions to your allergy medication.
