9 ways to prepare for spring allergies: Part 2

Don't let spring allergies catch you off guard. Make sure you're well prepared this year.

In part one of our three-part series, we talked about how horrible last year's allergy season was. You remember, correct? Many parts of the country had a long, snowy winter which pushed spring allergy season into the summer months. This compressed two seasons into one, which worsened the conditions of allergy sufferers.

To prepare yourself we suggested that you first visit an allergy specialist and doctor, start taking allergy medicine well before your allergies hit and understand how location plays a factor in the severity of allergies.

Here are a couple more ways to prepare:

1. Defend your home
Your home should be your safe haven. You lock the doors every night to keep intruders out. So, why are you letting harmful allergens in? While most people focus on cleaning during the spring, people really need to be cleaning their homes all year round. Focus on areas of your home where allergens tend to accumulate such as air filters, furniture and carpeting. Also keep the mudroom area clean, because these places are all full of allergens that have been tracked in by footwear.

2. Keep mold at bay
While it tends to be a major problem in the winter, mold can cause issues all year long. Keep mold at bay by ensuring there are no leaky faucets or appliances commonly found in basements, bathrooms and kitchens. These areas are full of exposed pipes.

3. Change up your schedule
If you suffer from allergies and you're not a morning person, you should think about changing up your schedule. Allergies are worst between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you're going to exercise outside, do so in the early morning before pollen and mold counts rise.
