5 tips to gardening without allergies

Don't suffer from allergies while gardening. Stay protected.

Are you tired of purchasing fruits and vegetables at the supermarket? Are you looking forward to picking them right out of your garden? If you consider yourself a gardener and someone who suffers from allergies, heed the following advice:

1. Take care of the gardens
When left unkempt, gardens can be a breeding ground for allergies. Make sure you're always pulling weeds, such as grasses and flowers, that produce some of the season's fiercest allergies like pollen and ragweed. While you can't do much about the pollen outside your garden, you can do something about the pollen right under your nose.

2. Avoid gardening during peak hours
Pollen is at its worst from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is also known as its peak hours. Instead of planting those vegetables during the middle of the day, do so in the late afternoon or evening when pollen counts are its lowest.

If pollen counts are expected to be higher than normal the day you plan on gardening, reschedule. Unless you are worried about animals getting at your tomatoes and cucumbers, they'll be there another day.

3. Watch for mold
Mold can grow anywhere. Watch for it in hedges or near rotted out wood. Mold spores can travel for miles, so there's not a whole lot you can do about it. But, if you had a choice between gardening next to a mold-filled piece of wood or not, which would you choose?

4. Keep your yard well maintained
Prune pollen-producing shrubs to reduce production, keep your grass cut and clean, and rid your lawn of weeds. Again, you can't do much about your neighbor's lawn, or pollen from miles away, but you can do the best to keep the pollen in your own yard under control.

5. Keep your windows closed
We constantly harp on this, but only because it's an important piece of advice. When managing your yard and garden, keep your windows closed. This will prevent pollen and mold from wandering inside.
