3 tips for living with pet allergies

Are you allergic to your pet? Use these tips to minimize your symptoms.

Does your pet trigger your allergies? It's possible to reduce your allergy symptoms while sharing your home with an animal. Try these 3 tips to minimize your contact with the allergens in your pet's dander:

Keep pets out of the bedroom.  The Visalia Times-Delta suggests turning your bedroom into an "allergy free" zone.  Banish the pets, try using a HEPA air cleaner, and obtain special bedding for allergies like mattress and pillow covers.  If it's safe and convenient for your pet to spend a lot of time outside, this can also help to reduce the allergens indoors.

Avoid carpets and cloth surfaces.   A carpet acts as a magnet for pet dander, so you should have as few as possible in your house.  Cleaning the dander from a wood floor is much easier, and frequent and thorough cleaning is necessary to combat allergens.  Cloth curtains and upholstered furniture present the same problem as carpeting, so try to keep pets away from them if you do have these items in the house.  Wash and vacuum them often, and decorate with other materials whenever you can.  Health.com provides more strategies for cleaning  when you have pets.

Bathe and brush your pets.  Cats and dogs should have a bath at least once or twice a week.  A veterinarian can also recommend special allergen-reducing shampoos.

Having pet allergies doesn't always mean you must live pet-less, or that you need to suffer if you do live with an animal.  Keeping your home clean and bathing your pets can help you to manage your symptoms while coexisting peacefully with your pet.
