3 tips for holiday allergy prevention

When you are gathered around with the whole family, be sure to keep these things in mind.

For those of us with food allergies, the holidays can be a really tricky time – especially if you aren't the one preparing the big dinner. The winter season also comes with its own slew of pesky allergens, which can make family celebrations a real drag because of coughing, sneezing and wheezing. But never fear! There are a number of things you can do to keep you allergies under control!

Here are a couple of things to know about in preparation for your Thanksgiving feast:

Candles: While they may add that flickering lighting that makes the home feel cozy and warm, scented candles are also often a trigger for allergy sufferers and asthmatics. Your best bet is to steer clear of the heavily scented items like potpourri, aerosol fresheners and even fires in this fireplace.

Decorations: If you are getting into the Christmas spirit, chances are that you have already begun decorating your home. If that's the case, keep in mind that these decorations can often trigger allergies. While live trees and garland can carry contact allergens – which impact sufferers when they touch the skin – as well as airborne inhalant triggers, don't forget that artificial trees used year after year can collect dust and mold.

Stress: "You may not want to admit it, but holiday celebrations may cause you stress, and a recent study showed that allergy sufferers with persistent stress experience more allergy flares," writes the Pennsylvania publication, the Pocono Record. "Stress can create several negative effects on the body, including causing more symptoms for allergy sufferers. So if you have to, walk away from the festivities for a while and read a good book or take a nap!"
