3 reasons fall allergies are awkward

Allergies can affect how your perform at work.

This year has been extremely tough for allergy sufferers, not only because of the health risks associated with allergies (e.g., asthma), but because of their impact on our social lives. We have enough to stress over, and it doesn't make it any easier having to worry about whether we're carrying around enough tissues to get through the day.

If you suffer from allergies, don't fret because others do too. Close to 50 million people in the U.S. deal with nasal allergies, and just over 13 million visit a physician's office, hospital outpatient department or emergency department because of allergies.

What these statistics tell us is that there are millions of others just like you and I who are facing the same awkward social situations because of allergies. Here are some of them that you may have already been involved in.

1. The office

The only thing you haven't put on your calendar is dealing with your allergies. You're not sure if you've spent more time writing that proposal or reaching for the tissues and nasal spray. Your colleagues would be able to answer that though.

To help manage allergies in the office, move away from windows and keep your desk constantly clean. Also, make sure to avoid fans which could kick up dust and particles.

2. The gym

You find yourself working your abs and chest more during each sneeze than you actually do during your sit-up routine. Always clean the machines before and after each use and stay away from windows.

3. Your home

Your house is supposed to be your place of Zen. It's supposed to be the place you escape office stress and where you go to relax after the gym.You find that one of the hardest decisions you've made all day wasn't in the office but whether or not you should open the windows or turn the AC on.

Here's a hint to help you out: Don't open the windows! While you may think that fresh air will help relieve your stuffy nose, it'll actually make your symptoms worse. You're actually letting more allergens into your home this way.

There are ways you can help manage allergies. Don't go outside during peak hours of the day. Keep the windows closed at all times and use the AC when possible. Regularly take allergy medicines and keep your office space and home clean at all times.
