14 ways to protect yourself from fall allergies: Part Two

Enjoy fall by properly managing allergies before they attack.

Autumn is a great time of the year to spend outdoors. What isn't there to love about cooler weather, apple pie, pumpkin picking and Halloween ghost tours? For some, answering this question is simple: allergies.

Fall is ragweed and mold season, and if not dealt with properly, it can make the lives of allergy sufferers miserable. Here are seven more ways to protect yourself from aggressive fall allergens:

  1. Protect your home: Keep windows closed and don't go outside during peak hours of the day. Make sure your HVAC units are cleaned and repair any leaky pipes. Doing so will prevent pollen from entering and mold from growing.
  2. Clean your home: Always vacuum with an HEPA filter and wash off counters at the end of each day.
  3. Don't eat certain foods: Are you a health fanatic? If you are, you won't be happy to know that foods such as melons, watermelons, cantaloupes, cucumbers, bananas, chamomile tea and zucchini can worsen symptoms for people who suffer from ragweed.
  4. Clean clothing: Don't drop clothes into a hamper and leave them there for weeks. These clothes could be covered with dust, pollen and mold particles, which can harm you even from the basket.
  5. Monitor humidity levels: Purchase a device that measures indoor moisture levels and buy a dehumidifier to reduce the amount of moisture if necessary.
  6. Wear a hat: Prevent allergies from getting tangled in your hair. If you're exercising outside, sweat will drag these particles down into your eyes.
  7. Don't skip medicine: Take allergy medicine regularly and consistently. Don't skip a medicine one day and think your body will adjust accordingly.
