10 mistakes people make when fighting allergies: Part 2

Before heading off to purchase allergy medicine, make sure you know what kind of allergies you have.

For those suffering from allergies, you know how difficult it can be to manage them. Stuffy noses and watery eyes are just the beginning. If you suffer from asthma, allergens can make the condition worse.

That's why you should understand how not to manage allergies. In the first part of our two-part series, we highlighted a number of mistakes people make, which include guessing the type of allergies they have, not showering in the morning and wearing shoes in their homes. Here are some more mistakes you should avoid:

1. Opening windows

There's nothing like breathing in that fresh springtime air. That is, unless you have allergies. During the spring, keep windows closed and turn on the fan or AC if you want to stay cool.

2. Drinking alcohol

Have you ever had a few drinks and noticed that your allergy symptoms became worse? That's because alcohol increases blood flow to the linings of your nose, making allergies unbearable.

3. Using strong perfumes

Perfumes can irritate nasal airways and lungs, increasing the chance you cough. This certainly doesn't help people already suffering from mold, dust or pollen allergies.

4. Not taking allergy medication consistently

When you consistently take allergy medications, they build up your immune system's defense against allergens. Make sure to take them as prescribed.

5. Using a humidifier

In part one of our series, we advised readers to figure out exactly what they're allergic to. If, for example, they found out they're allergic to dust mites, using a humidifier would be a bad idea. Humidifiers release moist air, which promotes the growth of mites.
