Why you should filter your tap water

The water coming out of your tap is monitored by the government, but you may be surprised to learn that doesn't necessarily mean it's safe.

According to a report from The New York Times, between 2004 and 2009 alone, more than 62 million Americans were exposed to drinking water that failed to meet at least one commonly used government health guideline. Those guidelines are intended to help protect people from cancer and other serious diseases.

Tests conducted by The Times showed that the tap water in some U.S. cities contained arsenic at levels that have been associated with cancer. Samples from other cities showed traces of uranium, which can cause kidney damage. Other, separate testing efforts have revealed mercury, lead, manganese and other chemicals linked to serious health problems.

In 2008, the Associated Press (AP) reported that dozens of communities across the country were drinking from water supplies where trace amounts of pharmaceutical drugs had been recorded. A year later, the AP discovered that every state in the nation had at least one school with contaminated drinking water. The most common contaminants were coliform bacteria, lead, copper, arsenic and/or nitrates.

"The contamination is most apparent at schools with wells, which represent 8 to 11 percent of the nation's schools," said the AP report. "Roughly one of every five schools with its own water supply violated the Safe Drinking Water Act in the past decade, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) analyzed by the AP."
